Sandspit Road School was established in 1969, a period of rapid development for the Waiuku township. As the town expanded to support the growing Franklin agricultural sector and the rise of the nearby Glenbrook Steel Mill, our school was founded to provide a local educational hub for our flourishing community.
In addition to its English name, the school holds the Maaori name Te Kura o Rangiaawhea. This reflects its deep ties to the surrounding Waiuku area and local iwi history near the head of the Waiuku River estuary. Our school stands in the heart of Waiuku, an area of significant historical importance to local iwi, Ngaati Te Ata Waiohua. Our school is deeply connected to this land, resting near the Te Awaroa portage, a vital ancient route used for centuries to transport waka between the Manukau and Waikato harbours.
Over the decades, Sandspit Road School has evolved from a small suburban primary into a vibrant full primary (Years 1–8). Our school hall was added in June 1993 and more recently we have built two large learning spaces whose names were gifted to us; Papaka which is a multipurpose space and Ohurua which provides us with Toi Tech (Arts Class) and STREAM Class (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). Under the stewardship of long-standing leaders-Ken North, Graeme Newall, Sharyn De Jonge and our current Tumuaki Denise Horley, we have focused on balancing academic achievement with the holistic development of our students so that they can go out into the world and help to make it a better place.
